Maral Maniss is a Beirut-based visual artist whose work blurs the distinction between abstraction and representation. Her work has been the subject of several solo and collective exhibitions in Lebanon, Syria, Paris, Monaco and Mumbai.
A complement to her paintings, Maniss’ works on paper form a critical part of her practice and aim to enlighten us on her artistic process through a powerful representation of her curiosities and opinions. Using bold figures and biomorphic forms, the mixed media works are color explosions that are part of a fantastic world referencing feminism, nature and the subconscious. Reflecting on personal experiences and memories, every drawing contains visual elements related to social and cultural issues while withholding subtle undertones of a rebellion. The use of bright pastel and pencil colors serve to distract the viewer from the underlying intensity of her narratives. Maniss’ work is constructed freely, while holding an intentional balance of composition, colors, lines, forms, symbols and harmony.
