Founded by Jean Riachi, Nathalie Ackawi and Amar A. Zahr in 2017, CUB Gallery is a space dedicated to showcasing the work of emerging artists from fine art programs across Lebanon.

Tucked away on a side street in Badaro, a neon cub beams through all the hustle and bustle of the city. This emblem marks CUB Gallery; a new kind of exhibition space dedicated to creating an accessible channel for artists early in their career as well as young collectors. The artists represented by CUB Gallery are currently enrolled or recent graduates of art related degrees from Beirut-based universities. The gallery will serve as a platform for artists to present their artistic endeavors outside the academic curriculum and introduce their practice to the wider public.

The Story
Contributing to the community is deeply rooted in FFA Private Bank’s culture. Myself and the bank are dedicated to helping causes such as: education, health, human rights and sustainability. Between 2009 and 2013, FFA Private Bank hosted a number of exhibitions featuring emerging artists who demonstrated great potential. The idea was to support such artists by giving them access to a larger audience in the media as well as within the bank’s large pool of affluent clients and to promote local art within the local community of collectors and beyond.

My neighborhood is marked by a beautiful old convent which is now the Lebanese University Faculty of fine arts. The beautiful artwork sprawled across the university’s fence made me think of the number of talented students who would never be able to deploy their capabilities because of the lack of opportunities for emerging artists in Lebanon.

I decided to find a way to, on one hand, help young plastic art students exhibit and sell their work and, on the other hand, democratize contemporary art by allowing a larger young audience to admire and acquire affordable pieces.

Hence, the concept of CUB gallery was born.

The Space
In the spirit of promoting students and fresh graduates of Lebanese universities we launched an architecture competition for the design of CUB Gallery juried by renowned architect Youssef Tohme. The winner, Jeff Msanne, is a young and ambitious graduate from the Lebanese University (B.Arch. 2017), who proposed a modular unrestrictive design which has now been implemented.
